Ayuda Launches Remote Brief Advice & Referral Legal Clinic

Ayuda’s launched a remote Brief Advice and Referral Clinic on June 26 with DLA Piper. This clinic was made possible by the Immigrant Justice Legal Services grant program sponsored by the Executive Office of the Mayor.

Ayuda’s Brief Advice and Referral Clinics are low-barrier settings where individuals can obtain free immigration legal advice and referrals to legal service providers.

Our clinics leverage the power and resources of volunteer attorneys, willing to give their time and counsel to immigrant neighbors in need of services now more than ever, along with the expertise and commitment of Ayuda’s expert immigration attorneys and staff who serve as mentors to the volunteers and manage the clinics. Ayuda’s cutting edge Language Access Program ensures that our pro bono volunteers can communicate with all of our clients, no matter what language they speak!

On June 26, DLA Piper volunteer attorneys and Ayuda staff attorneys served 16 clients. The remote consults were staffed by 6 pro bono volunteers from DLA Piper.

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to support Ayuda’s mission of improving access to justice for low-income immigrants by participating in its first remote clinic,” said Lisa Dewey, DLA Piper pro bono partner and director of New Perimeter. “During these stressful and uncertain times, it is more important than ever to ensure that vulnerable individuals receive the assistance they need, and Ayuda’s efforts to virtually connect with the community are inspiring.”

Alberto Zacapa, DLA Associate and one of the pro bono volunteers at the June 26 clinic said that, “Helping others navigate the US immigration system is one of the most impactful ways to further diversity and inclusion in our local communities. The work Ayuda does is life-changing for many and being involved in any way to further that is hugely rewarding.”

We want to take this opportunity to thank DLA Piper for their commitment to supporting low-income immigrants access justice. If you’re interested in learning more about Ayuda’s pro bono program, visit our website to learn more.
